Heroes of the Sea ist ein Fotoprojekt über die Menschen und ihr Leben, über die portugiesische Seele, über ein Volk des Glaubens, der Sonne und des Meeres. Für dieses Projekt reiste Gonçalo Cunha de Sá  von Norden nach Süden des Landes, um die Arbeit und das Leben der Fischer und ihrer Familien aufzunehmen, ebenso wie die Zeremonien und Schutzheiligen der Fischer, ihre Siege, ihre Ängste und die langen Stunden des Wartens. Das Ziel des Fotografen war es, in den Menschen von heute das Erbe und die Identität der Helden des Meeres zu erfassen, in deren Adern immer noch Mut und Abenteuerlust ihrer Vorfahren fließen. Diese charakterisieren die portugiesische Seele bis heute.

Das Meer ist die Quelle des Lebens und der Inspiration für die Portugiesen. Ein Portugiese zu sein, das beruht auf Seele und Herz. Die portugiesischen Seefahrer öffneten neue Meereswege, akzeptierten keine Grenzen der Ozeane, tauschten Erfahrung, Wissen und Kultur immer in Akzeptanz des Anderen.

Unsere Fischer sind Beispiele für das Vermächtnis von Mut, Glauben und Ausdauer, die das portugiesische Volk immer ermutigt haben, allen Gefahren und Schwierigkeiten in die Augen zu schauen, in der Hoffnung, dass sich damit Chancen für eine bessere Welt eröffnen.

The Sea is the source of life and inspiration for the portuguese, and to be portuguese rests in the soul and in the heart. The portuguese sailors opened seas where there were no oceans, carrying our experiences and culture, our knowledge and ways, in exchange and acceptance of others.

Our fishermen are an example of the legacy of courage, faith and perseverance, that has always encouraged the Portuguese people face the dangers and difficulties, consecrating the hope that you can beat the odds and make for a better world.

Heroes of the Sea is a photographic project about people and life, about the portuguese soul, about a people of faith, sun and sea. For this project I went from north to south of Portugal to photograph the work and life of fishermen and their families, the ceremonies to honour the patron saints of the fishermen, their victories, the fear, the waiting. My goal was to capture in the images of today the inheritance of the identity of the heroes of the sea, in whose veins still runs the courage and the desire for adventure of their ancestors, which have always characterised the Portuguese soul.
